Civil Protection Coordinating Body Meeting with the Regional Governor, Costas Moutzouris, the Mayor, Giannis Malafi and all stakeholders, performed in Chios, Giannis Kefalogiannisin the presence of Chios MPs, Noti Mitaraki and Stavrou Michaelides. Mr. Kefalogiannis went to Chios, accompanied by the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou, due to the alarming situation from the 5 different fires on the island. In addition, at the “OLYMPOS” Mobile Operational Center, the Minister was informed in detail by Lieutenant General George Markoulakis by the Deputy Chief of the Fire Department.
As the minister said, the state is seriously considering the possibility of organized criminal activity, that is, arson and added that yesterday they face simultaneous fires “in multiple, geographically unrelated points on the island – a pattern that cannot be considered accidental”.
At the same time, he referred to the strengthening of both the Fire Brigades and the police, and as he pointed out the military panels. In addition, Mr Kefalogiannis pointed out that “when fires break out at the same time in such scattered spots, we must talk about suspicious activity”, while expressing his gratitude to the forces that attempt on the fires. Finally, he sent a strict message, stressing that “anyone who thinks he can play with the lives of citizens and cause chaos with planned actions will be brought before justice.”
In particular, Mr. Kefalogiannis during the meeting said:
“Since yesterday, we are facing simultaneous fires in multiple, geographically unrelated spots on the island – a pattern that cannot be considered accidental. The state is seriously considering the possibility of organized criminal activity, that is, arson, and therefore the island has already moved to the island by the Arson Criminal Department, which is working closely with state security.
We will not hide behind the words: When fires break out at the same time in such scattered spots, we have to talk about suspicious activity. And if it is verified that these are coordinated arson actions, then we are dealing with a dangerous, criminal attack on society, environment and life.
In consultation with the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoid, the police forces are reinforced on the island. The military panels are doubled, and the firefighters are also immediately strengthened.
Thus in 190 firefighters with 11 EMDE groups and 38 vehicles, already on the island, are added 44 firefighters with eleven 11 vehicles from Kavala ferry and travel, by air from Athens and Thessaloniki 92 firefighters of which 80 from the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 9th and 10th EMP. and ferry from Piraeus, on 2 different ships, 110 firefighters with 34 vehicles as well as 30 volunteers with 4 voluntary vehicles and ferry from Lesvos, 8 firefighters with 2 vehicles.
I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the forces they are trying to, but at the same time send a strict message: Anyone who thinks he can play with the lives of citizens and cause chaos with planned actions will be brought to justice.
Arson is a heavy crime and will be treated as such. We are not going to show the slightest tolerance. “
