In Cairo on Wednesday, Gerapetritis with the Greek mission for Sinai Monastery

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, will go on Wednesday 4 June to Cairoaccompanied by officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, Religions and Sports and Culture, to meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

According to reports, he will be accompanied by the Greek mission that was expected to go to the capital of Egypt tomorrow Monday.

Thus, with the new data, the Greek delegation led by the Greek Foreign Ministry will begin consultations with local authorities on Wednesday, following the recent decision of Egyptian justice to close the historic Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai and to confiscate its property.

At the heart of the consultations will be the ownership status of St. Catherine Monastery.

Greek positions are reinforced by its document Unesco, which proves that Egypt had recognized signed since 2002, that the ownership of territories and buildings belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church and the Archdiocese of Sinai.

UNESCO document for the monastery

A UNESCO document dating back to 2002, reflects Cairo’s commitment to land and buildings.

On the part of Athens it is reiterated that nothing will be accepted less than the commitments publicly reflected by the Egyptian president in the Greek capital.

“As Greece we remain in the prime minister’s commitment to President Sisi’s visit to Athens on May 7 and we do not expect any differentiation to what was agreed,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis underlined.
