Day of celebration Holy Spirit 2025 is Monday 9 June, with different operating conditions apply for supermarketshops and banks, as it is not one of the official holidays that apply horizontally for all employees.
On the day of the Holy Spirit, large supermarket chains are expected to operate normally, as has been the case in recent years. Although official announcements have not yet been issued by each company separately, it is certain that most stores will keep their usual hours, which starts early in the morning (07:45 for Lidl and about 08:00 for the other chains) and lasts until 21:00.
In the same context, smaller grocery stores such as ovens, grocery stores, as well as pharmacies, gas stations and popular markets – will remain open – with a formal Monday.
The image of the shops is more diversity. In several cities and shopping streets of the country, especially in tourist zones or in large municipalities, the stores will operate normally, either under regular schedule or with a slightly customized program.
However, in areas where local customs are consolidated or relevant decisions have been taken by municipal or regional authorities – as is the case in Corinth and in places in the Region of Central Macedonia – the shops will remain closed. In these cases, the day has been established as an informal but respected, local holiday.
Closed Public Services and Banks
For the State, the Holy Spirit Day has been officially recognized as a holiday, which means that all state agencies, ministries, organizations and public bodies, as well as banking stores, will remain closed.
Unlike the State, the Monday of the Holy Spirit does not belong to the compulsory holidays of the private sector, in accordance with Greek labor law. This means that employers do not have a legal obligation to grant permission unless this is provided:
- by collective contracts,
- by the internal regulations of the business,
- or from the consistent practice (work habit) in space.
