Heatwave with 53 ° C in Iran: Water and Power holidays, public services close

An extreme wave of heatwaves scanning the Iranwith temperatures reaching 53 ° C in the southern part of the country and causing extensive water supply and electricity problems, mainly in Tehran.

At least 18 of the 31 provinces of Iran have been affected, and on Monday (21.07.2025) temperatures above 40 ° C were recorded in ten provincial capitals. Authorities declared Wednesday as an official holiday and limited the public service hours to save energy and water.

In the city of Sabankareh, southern Iran, the thermometer showed 53 ° C, with state media referring to the warmest week of the year, with temperatures exceeding 50 ° C in several areas.

In Tehran, there was a water supply vacation on Tuesday, while the water supply company called on citizens to reduce consumption by “at least 20%”. “The dams that supply Tehran with water have been at their lowest level at the moment,” the service said, referring to the worst drought for 60 years.

Iranian President Massoud Pezkian warned that “the water crisis is more serious than we are discussing today” and called on citizens to limit over -consumption.

As an arid country, Iran is regularly affected by droughts, with the southern provinces often at the heart of the crisis.
