Haritsi-Ahtsioglou rift with Sakellaridis over electoral cooperation and the referendum due to… Tsipras

The deep rift in her bosom New Left confirmed the two-day work of the Central Committee of the party, which ended with the side of the Party Secretary prevailing, Gabriel Sakellaridis together with the old guard of executives coming from SYRIZA PS.

Maintaining a strong foothold in the Central Committee staff, the Sakellaridis – Tsakalotou group managed to control the correlation, something, however, that was expected due to the anthropogeography, but not conclusive for the future orientation of the party.

In practice, the rift between the leadership group, consisting of Alexis Haritsi, Efi Ahtsioglou and Nasos Iliopoulos and in the team under him Gabriel Sakellaridis has a strongly ideological character. The former are in favor of the reconciliation of the progressive forces, putting forward a “common ballot of the Plural Left”, while Mr. Sakellaridis together with former SYRIZA Ministers (Tsakalotos, Friend etc.) wish for a pure left-wing and radical turn, even looking forward to the cooperation of their party with MeRA25 of Yanis Varoufakis.

If the things that divided Mr. Varoufakis and Mr. Tsakalotos in the first year of his government SYRIZA they were more unbridgeable than the abyss, however, ten years later, both seem to consider their electoral cooperation possible, despite the objections and individual objections that have been expressed on certain points, in the last period of time.

In practice, the intra-party partnership Sakellaridis and “Ombrelas” occasioned by their common refusal to collude in a potential scheme under him Alexis Tsiprasat a time when the former prime minister is reportedly poised to return to a central role on the political stage, with a united and broad progressive ballot.

However, the Secretary of the New Left, Gavriel Sakellaridis he is reported to have emphasized, with an eye on collaborations, that “we disagree on how we can achieve a great Left. I also disagree with the recycling of the old plan”, taking clear distances from the logic of enlargement and extroversion, which governs the leadership group.

At the same time, the escalating pressure from the social base for a possible co-operation of the progressive forces flares up over time, with the president of the New Left, Alexis Haritsi to describe, according to information, at the meeting of the Political Bureau of the party, exonerated that there is a “division” in the party.

He himself, addressing the members of the body, allegedly warned that “then is the time to make a decision”, in case there was another plan in the discussion, while on a personal level, Mr. Haritsis raised the issue of the initiative for the cooperation of the progressive forces, as there are not a few times that the president of the New Left has called on the other progressive forces to line up in a common scheme in the logic of a Popular Front to the standards of France, attempting overall political change towards the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Run forward

In this “belligerent” climate, Alexis Haritsis tried to overcome the impasse of the intra-party conflict, calling on those present at yesterday’s proceedings to proceed to an intra-party referendumwhich was ultimately not approved by the majority of the body.

In such a case, only the members of the party (that is, those already written in the statements) would vote, in order to decide on the major issue, that is, whether the pre-election partnerships are qualified and in fact looking towards the side of the former prime minister, Alexis Tsipras.

However, the intra-party dispute did not deter a portion of the party members who are preparing, according to information, to collect signatures for the organization of an intra-party referendum after the work of the Central Committee is over. Even if the rejection of the referendum in the first phase rejected such a prospect, nevertheless the leadership group estimates that it can collect the signatures of 25% of the members and proceed with the internal party referendum, before the final decision is taken at the upcoming Congress.
