Haris Doukas: “The Roof is a social good and not a brokerage product”

At the meetings, the mayors presented the ambitious European Housing Action Plan (EHAP), which aims to create 1.2 million social housing points in 15 major cities, including Athens by 2030, with a total budget of 80 billion euros.

Mr Doukas, both at the plenary session of the European Commission of the Regions and at meetings with European officials, said: “The intensity of the housing problem across Europe requires immediate measures that will significantly increase the affordable housing offer. Today’s model must change now. They need brave public policies. The roof is a social good and not a stock market. The plenary of the European Commission of the Regions approved a comprehensive proposal to the Commission in view of the European plan for accessible housing, which will be finalized in early 2026.

The main axes of the proposal are the redirect of European funds in funding of affordable housing programs, the highlighting of municipalities in key partners for the implementation of programs and the creation of new financial tools to tackle the housing crisis. “
