Meeting in Brussels, today, Deputy Foreign Minister, responsible for financial diplomacy and extroversion, Tasos Hatzivasiliouwith the Commissioner for Commerce and Financial Security of the European Commission, Maros Sefzovic.
The Deputy Minister was extensively informed by the Commissioner on the latest developments in the US trade negotiations, which are continuing intensively, with the aim of reaching an agreement by July 9 – the date on which the suspension of US duties expires.
The two agreed that a possible escalation of commercial tensions would have negative consequences for both economies. The Deputy Minister reiterated Greek support in a negotiating resolution, provided that the reciprocity of the benefits would be ensured and the EU’s regulatory autonomy would not be doubted.
At the meeting, the European Commission’s negotiations with India and other Asian countries were also examined, with the aim of concluding trade agreements. The Commissioner emphasized that US protective trade policy acts as a catalyst to strengthen third -country nationals to join agreements with the EU.
Mr Hatzivasiliou re -confirmed Greece’s steady support for mutually beneficial trade agreements that would secure the interests of Greek businesses, with particular emphasis on the agri -food sector, pointing out the country’s particular sensitivities. At the same time, it also set the Gulf countries on the Greek priorities for the development of trade relations.
Finally, the interlocutors referred to the broader efforts to simplify the processes of the single market, as a key tool for reducing administrative weight, enhancing competitiveness and maximizing consumer benefits.
