A historic moment lived by the inhabitants of Naxoson Saturday morning (12.07.2025) when they saw a green turtle to give birth to a beach on the island. This is the first time this species has been born on the Cyclades island.
The turtle came out on the beach of Naxos around 02:30 in the morning and began digging the nest to leave its eggs. Her birth was completed after 3 whole hours.
In a post posted by the account ‘Naxos Wildlife Protection’ (‘Naxos Island Wildlife Protection’) Reported that the turtle belongs to the species Chelonia mydas who prefers to give birth to Rhodes and Crete.

“The first recording of green turtle nesting (Chelonia mydas) in Naxos and the Cyclades. An incredibly pleasant surprise awaited us last night: at 2:30 we received a phone call from Apollo of Naxos that a sea turtle had gone back to the “Akrogiali” cafe. We rushed immediately to the spot and actually found a large turtle preparing her nest.
