We condemn the decision of the Israeli government to further expand military operations in Gaza. This plan is in danger of violating international humanitarian law. We call on Israel to immediately reverse this decision and not to implement it.
We reiterate that any attempts to attach or extend the settlements violate international law.
The expansion of military operations will endanger the lives of all civilians in Gaza, including the remaining hostages, and will lead to further unnecessary pain.
This week, the Security Council listened to a shocking deposit from Ilai Davidhis brother Eviant Davidwhich was brutally abducted by Hamas on October 7th and is held under inhumane conditions in Gaza for over 21 months.
His presentation was a strict reminder that the suffering of the rest of the hostages and their families must be terminated. The Security Council has repeatedly called on the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. And we are clear that Hamas must be disarmed and not have a future participation in Gaza’s governance, where the Palestinian Authority must have a central role.
But this decision of the Israeli government will not secure the return of the hostages and endanger their lives.
It will also aggravate the already devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza and is in danger of causing more deaths and mass displacements of Palestinian citizens.
IPC has warned that hunger is unfolding in Gaza. Children die of starvation. Hunger is so intense that desperate citizens are risking their lives at points of humanitarian aid to nourish their families.
