Greece declared EEZ in the Ionian Sea from Corfu to Cape Tainaro

The presidential decree was published, the first signed by Constantine Tasoulas

The Presidential Decree, which “proclaims from the Hellenic Republic Exclusive Economic Zone in the Ionian Sea, the Ionian Islands and until the Cape Tainaro of the Peloponnese” was published in the Government Gazette, a few hours after the official presentation of the Greek.

It is essentially the incorporation of the agreement between Greece and Italy, signed on June 9, 2020 and came into force in November 2021. As specifically noted in the Presidential Decree No. 33 “it is declared by the Hellenic Republic of the Hellenic Republic to the Ionian Sea. Related provisions of the Greek -Italian agreement of 2020 and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It is also emphasized that “the Hellenic Republic reserves the reservation, and for its other coasts, its respective rights, as they arise from the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on December 10, 1982”. The agreement on the two sides was based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as stated in the Government Gazette, and essentially confirms Greek positions on the right of the islands in marine zones, namely EEZ and continental shelf.
