Greece – Bulgaria Agreement on Arda Water Management – Normal flow to Greece is ensured to Greece

An agreement, which will be in the form of the political proclamation of the governments of Greece and Bulgaria, have reached the two countries on the issue of the use of the Arda River Water, which has been a point of friction for many months, due to the expiry of the pre -existing agreement.

This agreement ensures the normal flow of water to Greece, thus reassuring the agony of farmers in the area, as the waters of the river are critical to agricultural crops.

Last week, the Foreign Minister G. Gerapetritis He had a telephone contact with his Bulgarian counterpart G. Georgiev, during which bilateral relations were discussed, as well as the issue of water management.

According to the Bulgarian News Agency, the two countries have reached the text of an agreement, which provides for Bulgaria’s commitment to supply the Greek side with a regulated amount of water from the Arda River to irrigate territories in Greek territory, as regulated by the agreements between the Greek Republic and the 1964.

Greece, under the agreement, states its intention to “start within a reasonable time for the modernization of the existing and/or the construction of a new equalizer, thereby ensuring the irrigation needs of the Greek territory, with the aim of independence, with the purpose territory of the Hellenic Republic.

Bulgaria states that it will provide the “accumulation, storage and adjustable amount of water” from the Arda River, through the “Arda” dams, which is essential for the irrigation of territories in the Greek territory, up to the modernization of the Greek. Declaration.
Greece also states that it will take the necessary measures to ensure the return of the relevant costs for the Bulgarian side provided by the “accumulation, storage and adjustable amount of water” from the Arda River.

The problem was found in the fact that both countries need Nestos’s water flow at the same time of the day – Bulgaria for the operation of a hydroelectric power station, and Greece for irrigation of agricultural crops. Now, with the agreement and the construction of a reservoir on the Greek side of the borders, the uninterrupted use of waters for irrigation needs will be ensured.

The issue of Nestos’s waters has been exploited by the nationalist opposition in Bulgaria, which is also trying to link it to the issue of the new border passage of Rundozem -Xanthi, which has been almost completed by the Greek side of the border.

The nationalist opposition has adopted extreme rhetoric that is also turning against Greece, as it seeks to associate the voters of the constituency, who are protesting because, as long as the opening of the new border passage is delayed, they are forced to … bypass a few kilometers.
Of course, between Greece and Bulgaria the move is being carried out smoothly through the four tolls that are already in operation, but this passage is expected to be completed soon.
