A historical decision was announced by the Minister of Sports Yiannis Broutsisas from January 1, 2026, all the amateur sports clubs of the Aegean and Ionian islands will have free travel of all amateur sports clubs with the subsidized ships operating the 77 barren routes.
As Yiannis Broutsis said, the measure emerged after close cooperation between the Ministry of Maritime and Island Policy and the Ministry of Sports, while concerning a total of about 650 associations, registered with the e-Kouros register-that is, about 10% of the country’s amateur associations. Beneficial athletes and athletes are estimated at 35,000.
This measure is part of a broader strategic plan to strengthen sports in the region, which includes the institutionalization of islanders as a factor in increasing the financial support of unions by bets.
In detail the statements by the Minister of Sports, Yiannis Broutsis:
“Today is a special day for sports on our islands and a personal justification of our long -standing policy of recognizing the difficulties of islanders and sports.
I thank the Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Vassilis Kikilia, Deputy Minister Stefanos Gikas and Secretary -General Vangelis Kyriazopoulos for the excellent cooperation and satisfaction of a just and chronic request.
This initiative essentially supports the island sports, it concerns about 650 amateur clubs, registered with the E -Kouros (10% of the Territory) and nearly 35,000 athletes and athletes!
It removes one of the biggest obstacles that have been facing the Aegean and Ionian unions over time: the high cost of their movement.
I was committed, before I even took over the portfolio of Sport, as a MP of Cyclades, that all these clubs would not be alone in the race they give to the development of sport.
And we do it in steady steps: From last year, by institutionalizing the island as a factor in increasing the strengthening of sports clubs by distributing the betting resources and now with their free movements.
We continue, with knowledge and strategic planning, to strengthen sports in the region. “
Statements by the Deputy Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Stefanos Gika:
“The current decision of the Council of Ferry Transportation (you) with the acceptance of a timeless demand of sports agencies and local communities of our islands, which was so strongly supported by Sports Minister Yiannis Broutsis, is undoubtedly a particularly positive development for the development of Greece.
The approval of the proposal by the Minister, Vassilis Kikilia and the positive opinion of the members of the SAS, opens the way and facilitates thousands of athletes and athletes, creating a favorable environment to further strengthen our sport. We are solving another fixed demand of our islanders.
The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis shows her sensitivity and reacts listening to the demands and proposals of society. “
