Geroulanos: PASOK’s big challenge is this population that has trusted the party in the past and today stays at home at the time of the ballot box

“We are currently living in a Greece of crisis”

“PASOK’s big challenge is not the percentage of the Left or the Right that it can win or lose. It is this population that has trusted the party in the past and today stays at home at polling time“, said the parliamentary representative of PASOK, Pavlos Geroulanos.

Speaking on Tuesday 11 November to Action24, he said: “Abstention from the elections in Greece is now one in two Greeks. Of this population, almost half the percentage had trusted PASOK. They may have gone to other parties for a while, tried something else and finally it didn’t work out for them and they went back. These people expect us, these people we have to talk to. I don’t look so much at what is happening around, I care about the goal we have set as PASOK”.

Then, as Pavlos Geroulanos explained: “We are currently living in crisis Greece. One is the economic crisis, the crisis that exists in the market, that is, with the precision that your income is not enough. We also have the foreign affairs crisis, which is very important. In all of these we can simply express in words what we believe. The one crisis in which we can show with actions what we believe is the crisis of institutions”.

“Today, populist parties are rising in most Western democracies, there is a malaise in the world and they are shrinking democracy, discrediting institutions. It is the well-known reaction of the maintenance of society, in the face of any moment it is squeezed. We cannot leave these matters to the people. In this formula, PASOK must take the exact opposite position. And here he is given the opportunity to show that he means what he says”, he noted.

“In PASOK we don’t have an “explosion” of democracy now. “Explosion” of democracy means that from where you are you take a huge step forward. At this time, a congress gives you the opportunity to make changes in the statute, in the way you operate, in how you take a position”, he emphasized, adding that “even an extremely democratic party, center-left – I don’t really like the term, but let’s put it that way – in Europe right now, can make an “explosion” of democracy”.

“We had a first meeting for the conference and there all the executives were positioned in a very constructive way about how things can be made better. One of the things we can do is in the operation of the party”, he assessed, referring to the first meeting of the Political Secretariat of the Conference held last week in Harilaou Trikoupi.
