Germany: Simplify military supplies to facilitate increase in defense spending

The law aimed at accelerating military planning and procurement was approved by the German Chancellor Council Friedrich Mertzas part of the efforts of the government’s alliance to quickly turn federal army (Bundeswehr) in Europe’s strongest conventional army.

Friedrich Mertz’s CDU/CSU blocks and his Social Democrats have virtually suspended the rules that limit the new lending to finance defense spending and have committed to achieving the revised NATO’s 5% NATO expense.

The historical change of policy after years of neglect of the Armed Forces was caused by Russia’s complete invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and accelerated with President Vladimir Putin regarded as a growing threat to NATO’s eastern wing.

The new law, which is now submitted to Parliament for approval, is designed to facilitate and accelerate the assignment of public contracts to meet the Bundeswehr needs, according to a joint statement published on Wednesday (23.7.25) by the Ministries of Defense and Economy.

It also includes changes to the spatial law on air defense radar systems and military airports.

“The list of measures in the bill is wide and will provide us with the necessary flexibility,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, stressing the need for “close cooperation” with the security and defense industry.

“We want to accelerate supplies to make Germany safer. Only together can we achieve this goal. I trust companies’ support, “added Pistorius, who hosts weapons industry executives for talks on Wednesday in Berlin.
