Border controls between Germany and Luxembourg may be extended beyond March 2025, when the rule is set to come to an end.
This comes after Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, said that these measures are helping to strengthen security further among the bloc, Schengen.News reports.
Last week, Faeser said that border controls may be extended after the initial six-month period.
We need these controls until external border protection in the European Union is significantly strengthened.
Luxembourg Has Not Been Informed for These Plans
In response to the recently announced measure by Germany, Luxembourg’s Home Affairs Minister, Léon Gloden, told Luxembourg Times that the government has only been informed of this plan through the press.
The Luxembourg government has not yet been officially informed by Germany. Luxembourg disapproves of controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area and is in favour of strengthening controls at the external borders.
Through a statement, the ministry said that unnecessary disruptions to cross-border traffic should be avoided and the impact on the daily lives of people in Luxembourg must be kept as low as possible.
Germany Finds Border Controls Effective in Combating Irregular Migration
Germany introduced border controls at all of its land borders on September 16set to remain in place for six months.
Announcing the decision, Minister of Interior of Germany Nancy Faeser said that border controls are particularly important in this period when the country has been registering a high number of threats from Islamist terror groups.
We are doing everything we can to protect the people in our country against this. We are strengthening our internal security through concrete action, and we are continuing our tough stance against irregular migration.
Authorities in Germany argued that the decision would protect national security and curb the number of internationals attempting to reach the country without valid visas or in an irregular way.
Besides, authorities in Germany said that since the implementation of this measure until November 11, 49 nationals from Luxembourg were refused from entering Germany.
Germany’s decision sparked controversies among politicians, organisations and lawmakers. The latter called on Germany and France to put an end to this measure.
Last month, the lawmakers expressing their disagreement with the implementation of border controls said that such a measure cannot be extended if the requirements to make such prolongations are not met.
