NATO has asked Germany to contribute up to seven battle brigades to the alliance over the next decade. Battle vehicles and tanks, if approved, will equip these forces. The order examined by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and the top Bundeswehr generals will include up to 1,000 Leopard 2 tanks and up to 2,500 armored GTK Boxer battlefields, people said. The tanks are manufactured by KDNS and Rheinmetall and the battle vehicles are manufactured by Artec, a consortium of KDNS and Rheinmetall.
Rheinmetall’s shares rose up to 3.7% in Frankfurt after the plans were disclosed.
The total order could reach 25 billion euros, sources said, warning that because negotiations on supplies are still ongoing, the final number may be lower.
Orders are expected to be finalized in the coming months and MPs could give the green light by the end of the year, Bloomberg sources said.
Germany promised additional brigades as part of an attempt to achieve the new NATO goals for the capabilities that leaders agreed at a summit in the Netherlands in June.
Regardless of battle tanks and armored battlefields, Berlin received earlier approval this year for the purchase of more than 1,000 Patria armored vehicles from the homonymous Finnish Defense Systems Manufacturer.
