The Minister of Foreign Affairs, George GerapetritisHe said today that Greece would ensure the safe crossing of ships in its territorial waters and are involved in the international lifelle to Gaza, adding that Athens has already informed Israel of the presence of Greek citizens in the venture.
The Global Sumudilla Sumudilla mission, consisting of about 50 political boats, seeks to bypass the naval blockade of Gaza. Among the participants are lawyers and activists, including Swedish activist Greta Tundberg.
“At the moment there is only a small number of vessels in the Crete waters area and we will ensure their safe sailing,” Mr Gerapetritis said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In addition, he said that the Greek government has already informed the Israeli side of the participation of Greek citizens and that our country will take care of the smooth course of events.
Italy, on the other hand, sent a warship to assist in the intuitive, after attacking the boats from 12 drones to international waters, 30 nautical miles south of Gavdos.
Mr Gerapetritis noted that Greece is not planning a mission of naval forces such as Italy and Spain, but stressed that the incident with drones would be thoroughly examined.
Despite the downgrading of the incident, according to Reuters, the Foreign Minister said that Greece remains on a full alert to ensure security in the region.
