Gerapetritis: Greece can play an important role for peace and prosperity in the Middle East

At the Bahrain International Forum, Mr George Gerapetritis focused on Athens’ role in ensuring stability in Middle East and in its strategic relations with the Arab states.

Speaking after his speech at the annual Manama Dialogue Forum, the Foreign Minister underlined the importance of the forum, which brings together politicians, businessmen and the intellectual elite, for discussions on the security of the Gulf countries and global stability.

Mr. Gerapetritis highlighted Greece’s strategic position as a “bridge” between East and West, North and South, and its strategic cooperation with the Gulf countries and the wider Middle East. He emphasized that Greece, with its diplomatic power and strong presence in international organizations (European Union, NATOUN), can play a critical role in bridging differences and promoting global security.

He also referred to his contacts with Foreign Ministers, such as those of Jordan, Bahrain and the United Kingdom, with whom he discussed issues concerning bilateral relations and the role of Greece in the wider region. As part of this visit, the Foreign Minister also held meetings in Baghdad with its leaders Iraqsuch as the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussing the cooperation of the two countries and the investment opportunities emerging in the region.

Finally, he emphasized that the bilateral relations between Greece and Iraq are in a development phase and that Greece, with its strong diplomatic and economic influence, is recognized in the region and internationally as a country capable of playing an important role in maintaining peace and prosperity in the region and the world as a whole.
