“Solidarity with Ekrem Imamoglou and all those in Turkey are facing unfair persecution because they are defending democracy,” former Prime Minister George Papandreou said.
The former prime minister and MP of PASOK added: “The arrests of politicians with dubious charges are an immediate attack on the will of the people and the fundamental principles of the Republic.”
In detail the full statement of George Papandreou:
“We stand in solidarity with Ekrem İmamoğlu and all those in Turkey are facing unfair persecution because they defend democracy. The arrests of politicians with dubious categories are an immediate attack on the will of the people and the fundamental principles of democracy.
Turkey is a country with enormous potential, built with the will and hard work of its citizens – who believe in justice, freedom and the right to determine their future. But the efforts to divide, silence and intimidate the opposition weaken society, at a time when unity and progress are more necessary than ever. The real leadership does not stifle voices, but hugs them. True power lies in democracy, not in fear.
The voice of the Turkish people cannot and will not be silenced. We admire your courage in defending democratic values and stand by your side in the struggle for a free and just Turkey »
