There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military (IDF) on the raids reported by Palestinian media. The reports came hours after Israeli soldiers in Rafah, on the southern tip of Gaza, came under fire from gunmen. The soldiers responded, while according to the Palestinian media, there was also Israeli cannon fire in the area. Hamas has denied any involvement, according to the Times of Israel.
Associated Press reporters and eyewitnesses heard tank fire and saw explosions in various parts of Gaza, including Gaza City and Deir al-Balakh. According to Palestinian sources, one of the attacks hit an area near Gaza’s largest hospital, Shifa, without causing any casualties.
Dead women and children
An Israeli strike on a car in Khan Younes in the southern Gaza Strip killed at least five people, including two children and a woman, said Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Hamas-controlled agency.
Israeli shelling of an apartment in the Amal neighborhood, west of Khan Younes, killed two people, including a child, and injured many, according to the same source.
Four people, three women and one man, were killed after an Israeli airstrike hit a residence belonging to the al-Bana family in the neighborhood of Shabra, in the southern part of Gaza City. Four people, including a child and an infant, were injured during this raid.
The spokesman for the Civil Protection agency also reported two wounded from an Israeli strike on a tent housing refugees in al-Zawaida, in the central sector of the Gaza Strip.
According to the same spokesman and testimonies, the Israeli army bombarded the compound of al-Sifah hospital, on the western side of Gaza City. The information was confirmed to AFP by the director of the hospital, Mohammed Abu Salmiya.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he had ordered Israeli forces to “immediately proceed with heavy strikes on Gaza” after a meeting on Israel’s response to repeated ceasefire violations.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said Hamas would pay a “heavy price” for attacking Israeli soldiers. “Hamas’ attack on soldiers in Gaza is a clear red line, and the IDF will respond with great force. Hamas will pay many times over for the attack and for violating the agreement to return the dead hostages,” he said in a statement.

Chief of the General Staff, General Eyal Zamir, said Israel “will not remain silent” in the face of ceasefire violations by Hamas. “Hamas had promised to return the bodies of the dead hostages, but it is breaking its promise. We are well aware of the nature of this organization — it is based on terrorism, deception and treachery,” he said, adding that “if Hamas does not live up to its obligations, it will bear the responsibility and pay a heavy price.”
“The truce has not broken,” says the US
«The truce is maintained. That doesn’t mean there won’t be small skirmishes here and there,” said Mr US Vice President Jay D. Vance talking to reporters.
“We know that Hamas or someone else inside Gaza attacked an Israeli soldier. We expect the Israelis to respond, but I believe the president’s peace will be maintained regardless.”
US officials have not been particularly critical of ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, which have killed nearly 100 Palestinians since the start of a US-backed truce, as well as other violations such as continued Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid.

Following Hamas’ violations, Israel wants to extend the “Yellow Line” to which it has withdrawn under the ceasefire agreement, thus expanding the territories in Gaza it will control. However, US sources stress to Jewish media that the US opposes any fundamental change to the “Yellow Line” and any new Israeli ground invasion of Gaza.
Hamas denies killing Israeli soldiers
Hamas announced it on Tuesday night that it has nothing to do with the shootings in Rafa and that it remains committed to the ceasefire. It said in a statement that “the Israeli army’s criminal attack on various areas of Gaza is a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement” and called on mediators to pressure Israel to stop “dangerous violations”.
Israel accuses Hamas of repeated violations of the agreement reached earlier this month and claims the organization knows where the bodies of most or all of the hostages are foundbut delays on purpose and stages fake “discoveries” of bodies.
In addition to refusing to return the bodies of the 13 dead hostages remaining in Gaza, Hamas reportedly staged a mock “discovery” of Ofir Jarfati’s remains in front of the Red Cross before handing them over on Monday night.
Dead Israelis in Gaza
Last week, two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack in the Rafah area. The military attributed the attack to Hamas, although the group denied responsibility for actions by its fighters in areas controlled by the IDF.
OR military wing of Hamas also announced that postponed the handover of a hostage’s body scheduled for 8 p.m., saying it is doing so “in response to ceasefire violations by the occupying power”.
The Saudi Al-Hadath network reported that Hamas recovered another hostage’s body from a tunnel in Khan Younis, in addition to one identified earlier, and planned to hand it over the same evening.
According to Israeli media, Netanyahu decided to expand IDF control over more areas of the Gaza Strip, following repeated violations of the agreement by Hamas. The prime minister’s office did not comment on the reports, while Netanyahu was reported to have discussed the matter with senior US officials to coordinate the move.
Channel 12 also reported that while the military had allowed Hamas to enter Israeli-controlled areas to search for bodies of hostages, the group used the opportunity to recover weapons.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants invaded southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people – mostly civilians – and taking 251 hostages.
The 20 remaining hostages alive were freed earlier this month after 738 days of captivity as part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war. The bodies of 13 dead hostages, including a soldier killed in the 2014 war, still remain in Gaza.
Under the agreement, Israel released 250 life prisoners, as well as some 1,700 Palestinians who had been arrested after the October 7, 2023 attack – some transferred to the West Bank, some to Gaza and some to third countries.
