Greece’s initiatives as the chairman of the UN Security Council regarding the protection of civilian and other vulnerable charges under the war, the foreign minister, the foreign minister, said. George Gerapetritisin a statement to ERT from New York. “Greece, with its initiatives, will be in the spotlight, that there is the way that armed conflicts are limited. Above all, however, where there are armed conflicts, to limit the negative consequences of humans and especially the most vulnerable,” he noted.
Mr Gerapetritis’ statement is as follows:
“In the context of the Greek Presidency at the United Nations Security Council, Greece has caused a debate that concerns the protection of civilians in war. A issue that has gained great news, but is also a matter that concerns the very values of humanity, which are inferred within the map of the United Nations. Journalists, still diplomats or those who are under humanitarian missions, everyone needs a special protection.
Unfortunately, the data we have are extremely negative. Incidents of violence are increasing, becoming increasingly aggressive, so today there is an urgent need to take immediate action to protect civilians. About 130 conflicts are currently raging in the world. Conflicts, which affect those categories of people, which are affected as much as possible because of their weakness. Greece, taking this initiative, drafted a joint statement, which also echoes the recent events, which we are experiencing where armed conflicts are evolving.
This proposal, which attributes exactly the values of humanitarian law, was adopted by 80 diplomatic missions, 80 countries. A very high number, compiled with the Greek proposal. And I had the honor of making this statement here at the United Nations Central Facilities. It reflects the positions of the whole United Nations in relation to the protection that civilians must take.
In addition, the Greek Presidency also took a special initiative to have a joint statement of countries concerning the environmental impact on the cases of armed conflict, which also affect civilian populations, which are forced to move. Abandon their homes and be even more vulnerable to conflict regimes, in aggressive actions that are being done in their home country.
Greece is at the forefront of world diplomacy at the United Nations. We took the initiative, by the end of May, to convene a special meeting, which will concern civilians and the protection of vulnerable populations in the Gaza area, so that there would be an assessment. But above all, there is an active alliance so that we can ensure that children, women, those who suffer the bad suffering, bearing the armed conflict, protect themselves as much as possible.
It is an obligation of the international community. And Greece, on its initiative, will be in the spotlight, to have that way of armed conflicts to limit themselves. Above all, however, where there are armed conflicts, to limit the negative consequences of humans and especially the most vulnerable. “
