Folegandros: In the Aegean Court of Appeal the case of Garifalia — The accused asks for mitigation, the family speaks of a lack of remorse

Continued on Syros the trial in the second degree for her murder Garifalias in July 2021 at Folegandros. The defendant, who was found guilty at first instance of homicide in calm state of mind and sentenced to lifelongis now seeking recognition lightening agents which could reduce his sentence. The court had rejected the related requests in the first trial.

The defense side brought back allegations of mental illnessasking for a different assessment of the act and the situation of the accused at the crucial time. The case had shocked public opinion: the couple was in vacation on the island, when a heated argument broke out during a car ride. After the incident, actions followed which – according to the indictment – constitute an attempt escape. The trial interrupted and expected to completed at the beginning December. Until the decision is issued, the first instance remains in force conviction and the discussion of mitigating factors will determine whether and how change the penalty.
