‘Fire’ puts the price of electricity – Inflation tries the strengths of households and businesses

At high levels ranged the inflation in Greece and June with the price of electricityIt is also one of the main “trigger” of accuracy that is suffering from households and businesses.

Specifically, the price of electricity increased by 23.1% in June 2025 compared to June 2024, according to official ELSTAT data. This change had the highest impact on the general consumer price index, contributing 0.60 percentage points to annual inflation, which stood at 2.8%.

The rise of electricity is recorded as the strongest price among all the goods and services examined in the ELSTAT report. In the same table, high increases are also recorded in housing rentals (+11.4%), home repair and maintenance (+7.3%) and hosting services (+6.7%).

The reasons behind this development are multiple. During the energy crisis 2022–2023, the government implemented a subsidy system that covered much of the households and business electricity account. These subsidies were horizontal and greatly subsidized even the most expensive floating invoices.

By the end of 2023, and mainly in 2024, subsidies have been significantly reduced and by January 2025 they have almost disappeared for the vast majority of consumers. Thus, the actual cost of energy passes to the final accounts.

According to market players, the increase is also resulted from both the adjustment of providers of providers and the completion of many fixed contracts, resulting in consumers moving to floating charges. In addition, in some cases retroactive adjustment charges or increases in adjustable network invoices are added.

Pressure in the cost of living

As a result, energy costs now constitutes a key factor in increasing living costs. According to ELSTAT’s detailed data, the housing rose by 7.2% annually, contributing 0.87 percentage points to inflation. The combined effect of increases in rents, electricity and maintenance of housing leads to a significant burden on household budgets, especially in urban areas.

Apparently, the evolution of electricity prices is expected to be a key factor in forming inflation and in the coming months based on the course of international energy markets and providers’ political pricing, which does not only affect households directly through their bills. As the burden is significantly for businesses, the price of energy raises the prices overall in the so -called “basket” of the consumer, but also to every aspect of life, captivating every product and service. And this is because with the wholesale price of the current climbing, the cost of production is increased, with the Greek industry demanding a subsidy of up to 50% on the cost of electricity, stressing that in Greek businesses energy costs are timeless from the highest in Europe.
