The MEP submitted a set of three written questions to the Commission on the environment and biodiversity Nicholas Farandourismember of its Environment and Budget Committees European Parliament.
“Finally, the Commission must face up to the significant delays in environmental legislation and the huge investment gap for environmentwater and biodiversity” said the Greek MEP from Brussels.
Nicolas Farandouris is calling for a review of the Commission’s decision to propose scrapping the autonomy of the flagship LIFE program – the EU’s only targeted funding program for environmental protection.
Mr. Faradouris cites recent reports that demonstrate the insufficient implementation of environmental legislation with an annual cost of 180 billion euros per year, an annual gap of 122 billion euros in environmental investments and significant delays in the implementation of the EU’s 2030 goals, as well as the Commission’s proposal for the next multi-annual EU budget to propose the abolition of the autonomy of the flagship LIFE program after 30 years successful operation.
In view of these, MEP Faradouris asks the Commission to:
a) measures to strengthen climate, environment and biodiversity action and address the multiple challenges identified by the European Environment Agency.
b) measures to strengthen environmental legislation and address the investment gap for the environment and climate.
c) assistance to Member States tailored to the challenges faced by each of them.
d) measures to strengthen and protect the most vulnerable areas and populations.
e) reinstatement of the flagship LIFE program and its integration into new programmes.
f) provision of a special climate program in the next Multiannual Financial Framework.
