The work takes shape «Upgrading of Evros Gardens Road Border Station»as the contractor company settled on the construction site last Friday “TEK Thessaloniki SA”.
The project, total budget 13,000,000 eurosis considered of national importance, as it concerns the most important road border station of Greece, which is the main gate of European Union towards her Turkey. The goal is to create one modern, functional and safe transit hub that will improve the speed of service to citizens and businesses, strengthening the interconnectivity of Thrace.
20% increase in crossings
The necessity of the project is demonstrated by the continuous increase in traffic. According to the figures of the Garden Customs, there was an increase in 2024 18,7% on incoming passenger crossings and 20,3% on outgoingcompared to 2023.
What does the project include?
The upgrade has a total duration 14 months oldof which the first three concern the preparation of the studies. The main interventions include:
- Modernization and extension of the existing infrastructures.
- Construction new traffic lanes for decongestion.
- Creation of new, modern spaces for Audit services.
- Systems upgrade securitylighting and energy efficiency.
Galamatis: “We prove that Public Administration can”
The project is implemented by Decentralized Administration of Macedonia-Thrace (ADM-Th)funded by the Ministry of the Interior and matured by EESYP.
The Secretary of the Decentralized Administration, Dimitris Galamatisstated: “We prove in practice that the Public Administration it might work effectivelyat rates that meet the needs of the citizens”.
As ADM-Th sources pointed out, the project is moving forward record speedsas complex bureaucratic and judicial obstacles were overcome in less than a year and a half, such as issues with forest lands and expropriationsthanks to the excellent coordination of all the agencies involved.
