Security issues in this critical geopolitical period have been dealing with 10th Delphi Economic Forum held April 9-12, with the Evangelos VenizelosVice-President of the Government and Foreign Minister (2013-2015), and a peer professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to point out that Donald Trump’s initiatives have questioned the West as a strategic entity, primarily in terms of security.
“We have a safety rift. We have a different sense of threat to Russia, “Mr Venizelos said, but stressed that the most critical is that the issue of European security is not concerned with the US. “Trump says that Russia is not a threat and will not bear the cost of European defense and is right in it, but whatever Europe does, nuclear power cannot be done, because the nuclear umbrella is American,” he said.
Referring to Greece, the peer professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki said that everything is oriented to Turkish danger, so the fact that internationally the sense of security is a lesser threat to us.
He noted, in fact, that for 50 years we have been arranging our relationship with Turkey on a bilateral criterion, so if we are now placed for the first time differently against Ankara, with the criterion of what is happening in the West, we will have a new framework of reference, in which we do not have much experience.
In a review of Greek -Turkish relations, he recalled that in Erdogan’s 23 years, we had friction but not a big episode, and commented that “we do not need to try what the trump reflexes are in an episode”, noting that for the US we are a small regional issue.
Mr Venizelos described Turkey as a large country, with a similar army and a different sense of lethal risk, as it accepts its involvement in businesses that may result in staff death and concluded that we must have a overall plan on how to deal with it.
Finally, in a question asked by Athanasios Ellis, editor -in -chief of the English -speaking version of Kathimerini, for the Greek -Cyprus -Israeli electric interconnection cable, he said we must see the political plan, as we have a complex project from a financial, technical and international view.
