US embassies across several European countries have published warning posts directed to European travellers, citing national security as the reason for potential expulsions.
US embassies in a total of 17 EU countries posted pictures on social media, often featuring President Trump and other administration figures, with these posts warning that visa applicants with “harmful behaviour” could be deported, Schengen.News reports.
These posts follow reports of students across Europe protesting in support of Palestine and against military attacks of Israel. Many students or professors have participated in such protests and the US plans to deport those who may potentially seek a visa.
US Embassy in Estonia Warns Visa Applicants
In a post published by the US Embassy in Tallinn, Estonia, the message warns that certain categories of people could face expulsion from the US.
If you are in this country to promote Hamas, to promote terrorist organisations, to participate in vandalism, to participate in acts of rebellion and riots on campus, we never would have let you in if we had known that. You lied to us. You’re out.
Another post published by the US Embassy in Budapest implied that the US does not want people who are going to be committing crimes.
The new Trump administration has been particularly strict when it comes to migration and travel. Recently, the government has been considering changes in the travel restrictions, which will impact almost all countries in the world, with the EU countries making no exemption.
New Trump Administration Could Hold Back Visa-Free Travel for Romania
As of January 2025, Romania was set to enter the US Visa Waiver Programme. The news was widely welcomed by Romanians who would now be permitted to enter the US without a visa.
After meeting a set of requirements, including here a three-per cent visa rejections mark, which was challenging for Romania to reach, the country’s membership to the visa-exempt programme is not entirely secured yet.
The Romanian Interior Minister recently confirmed that there are some technical issues with Romania entering the US Visa Waiver Programmesaying that due to the new reviews that Trump has conducted, the process would be held back for a while.
Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus remain the three EU countries that have yet to enter the US Visa Waiver Programme.
