Euclid Tsakalotos: “At your pace, we will reach Europe in 2062”

For policies that do not reduce social inequalities and do not lead to real convergence with Europe, the New Left General rapporteur has accused the government, Euclid Tsakalotosin his speech on the budget draft to the relevant House Committee.

Mr Tsakalotos raised the question of Who really benefits from tax relief of the € 1.7 billion promoted by the government, stressing that the debate should not be taken on the amount, but in the targeting of measures. He linked government policy to that of the center -right governments in Europe, which, he said, are facing political instability.

“37 years to reach the average of the EU”

The sharpest point of his criticism concerned the government’s narrative. The New Left MP presented a calculation, according to which, even if the scenario for twice as much of Greece’s growth rates by the EU is confirmed, the country will need:

  • 28 years to return to the 2009 level (90% of the European average).
  • 37 years to reach 100% of the European average.

“What would you suggest to Mr. Mitsotakis? Going to the elections by saying, “Vote for us in 2027 and don’t worry, in 2062 will we have reached the average of Europe?” “He said, addressing the government.

Irony for the “thumbs” of Europeans

Finally, Mr Tsakalotos commented in an ironic style the congratulations received by the Minister of Finance from his European counterparts to the Eurogroup. “It doesn’t make me impressed that Merz’s minister, Makron and Meloni say ‘what are you doing well’. Is this a confirmation that you are doing well, from your peers? “He asked, likening the situation to inviting a communist Lenin’s agreement to prove the correctness of his views.
