EU – USA trade negotiations: today the Sefsovic phone call with Lutnik for duties

Agrees or European Union By accelerating negotiations with the USAone day after Trump’s decision to extend the deadline for imposing 50% of the EU until July 9th.

The telephone conversation by EU Commerce Maros Sefsovic is expected to take place today with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik. “There is a new impetus for the negotiations,” European Commission spokesman Paola Pinos said today (26.5.2025), a day after the telephone communication of Commission President Ursula von der Layen with Trump. “They agreed to speed up the trade negotiations and remain in close contact.”

After the phone call, Trump exposed the deadline to hit the EU with 50% duties by more than a month, on July 9, to allow more negotiations. “We had a very nice phone call and I agreed to shift it,” Trump said yesterday (25.5.2025).

The talks so far have not come up with somewhere and there is no clear way for an average solution that will satisfy both, according to Bloomberg. Europeans have complained that it is not clear what the US wants or even who is talking about the US president, and the US has said that the EU is unfairly targeting US companies with lawsuits and regulations.

Trump’s 50% threat will hit the US-EU trade of $ 321 billion, reducing the US gross domestic product by almost 0.6% and increasing prices by more than 0.3%, according to Bloomberg.
