EU: Task Force for Energy Union

The Council of Ministers of Energy today adopted Monday (16.6.2025) conclusions of the Presidency supported by 25 Member States that describe EU key priorities for energy security and including rapid RES development, energy efficiency improvement and investment in modern and resistant infrastructure energy and sufficient interconnections.

The text presented by the energy ministers emphasizes the need for differentiated supply chains, enhanced domestic production of pure technologies and protection of vital infrastructures from cyber threats and hybrid threats. Particularly important in terms of Greek interest, the explicit reference to the protection of the construction of works of common interest and in general energy infrastructure projects, such as underwater cables, from obstacles posed by third countries.

In addition, the conclusions underline the regulated sovereign rights of the Member States to exploit their natural resources in accordance with Union and International Law, making a special reference to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

In addition, the text refers to the issue raised by the Greek side of addressing persistent inequalities in energy prices between EU regions that are considered necessary to ensure the internal market, purchasing power of households and industry competitiveness.

At the same time, the conclusions refer to the activation of a new Task Force for the Energy Union, which was set up following a proposal made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a letter to the Commission Chairman last January.

At the request of our country, Task Force’s first meeting for Southeast Europe was set at the end of June, and its plenary will be convened in September.
