Ongoing is the Summit of the leaders of the European Union (EU) in which the proposed White Paper of the Commission is being discussed defensive costs.
Already, since their arrival at the Summit, some leaders of Member States have said they want the EU to further fund defense spending.
“This should not be a matter of loans, as it is today,” said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “I think we should also seriously discuss the possibility of a … common borrowing mechanism that will also provide grants to the Member States to make decisions on defense investment.”
According to Reuters, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed a similar proposal for “really common European media that will not directly burden the debt of states” at a meeting with European Commission chief Ursula von der Laienne, his office said in a statement.
Others, such as Dutch Prime Minister Dick Suff, said they would not block the defense spending plan, but are still very opposed to the Euro -bonds.
All leaders, except Victor Orban of Hungary, are expected to re -confirm support for Ukraine at the Summit.
According to his spokesman, Orban described the European Union as a “lion without teeth”.

EU leaders will also commit to doing more to make the Union more competitive against US duties and other financial challenges. There is widespread consensus on goals, but disagreement with the basic details.
