New tension occurred on Tuesday night (2/9) in the Thracian Sea, in maritime area between Thassos and Samothrace, when Greek and Turkish fishermen were argued.
According to Greek fishermen, in recent days Turkish fisheries enter Greek territorial waters, reaching even 4 to 6 nautical miles from Samothrace. They themselves complain that Turkish vessels are systematically fishing in areas within Greek maritime jurisdiction.
The episode of Tuesday
Around 22:00 in the evening, a group of Greek fishermen approached a Turkish fisherman to demand his removal. The situation, however, escaped the control, with the Turks raising the tones and – according to testimonies – even shooting in the air.
The incident was recorded in a video, which was later posted on social networks, sparking strong reactions.
The Greek fishermen complain that, despite their calls, there was no immediate response from the Greek authorities. It has not been clarified so far whether the Coast Guard was subsequently mobilized to examine the episode or enhance its presence in the area.
