Emergency discussion in the European Parliament on the Sinai Monastery is asking Yiannis Maniatis

Request to discuss the Egyptian Court’s ruling that endangers its operation and viability Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinaiof the oldest Christian monastery, was filed by the Vice President of the Socialist Group and Head of PASOK MEPs Giannis Maniatis.

G. Maniatis asks European Commission To come to the European Parliament, which will take place on June 16 to June 19 in Strasbourg, to present its position in relation to the Egyptian court ruling and what it intends to do for the protection of religious freedom in Egypt. As noted in the request, the Egyptian decision removes the ownership from the monks, giving them only the right to use the monastery and the environment. He also recalls that with the exception of abbot Archbishop Damianos, no one else has Egyptian citizenship, on the contrary they are in Egypt with a one -year visa, which endangers the viability of the monastery.

It is noted that this initiative follows the written question submitted by G. Maniatis on June 2 on the same issue. To be included in the June plenary, support is also required by the other political groups of the European Parliament in the negotiations that will take place next week.
