Elina Svitolina put away her tennis racket and was photographed in the snow, holding a rocket launcher and a machine gun, in an attempt to remind everyone that the war in Ukraine continues.
“Kharkiv has a special place in my heart. This city gave me the feeling of a real home when I was starting my professional tennis career at the age of 12. The city continues to offer me warmth and protection, during a great war.
You ask me where I find the motivation to fight in the sports arenas. I find it from my homeland, my people, Kharkiv and its heroes”, said Elina Svitolina, accompanying with this comment the specific photos, which have caused many discussions.
It should be mentioned that the 30-year-old tennis player from Odessa has been using social media – since the war in Ukraine started – to show what is happening in her homeland, while she has also organized charity events.
Kharkiv has a special meaning for Svitolina, as she moved there at the age of 12 to focus more on tennis. Until the war started, the wife of the French tennis player, Gaël Monfis, had maintained her base in Kharkiv.
