Eggs: Be careful … to have – EFET instructions after the worrying study

Eggs are an integral part of our diet, but recent academic study sound an alarm to households. The Single Food Control Agency (EFET) has issued instructions for their proper choice to ensure their quality and safety.

According to EFET, all category A eggs must bring to their shell a producer code.

Tips for Selecting and Maintenance

  • The method of breeding (eg 0 for biologically, 1 for free grazing).
  • The country of origin (for Greece, gr).
  • The Regional Code.
  • The Production Unit code.

In addition, egg packages must be compulsorily carrying specific indications, such as:

  • Her expiry date (at the latest 28 days from the spawning date).
  • Her weight class (S, M, L, XL).
  • Her indication of the farming method.

Tips for Selecting and Maintenance

For the purchase, storage and consumption of eggs, EFET advises consumers to watch out for:

  • Check the expiration date and the signs of the package to determine their freshness.
  • Avoid eggs with unclean, cracked or abnormal shell.
  • Do not consume eggs with unpleasant odor or damaged content.
  • The color of the shell and the yolk is not related to the quality or nutritional value of the eggbut with the chicken breed and her diet.
  • For their good maintenance, the eggs should not be washed and should be kept in a cool space.
  • The freshness of an egg is found by the size of its airplane: the smaller it is, the fresher the egg is.
