The decision to extend the suspension of ‘payrolls’ dictatorial (20%) until July 9 announced on Sunday night (25.5.2025) Donald Trump Following the communication and the “very good discussion” that the US president had with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen.
“He phoned me and asked for the June 1st deadline to be extended and said he wanted to do serious negotiations,” Donald Trump said before boarding the Presidential Aircraft in New Jersey. “We had a very good discussion and I agreed to extend the deadline until July 9 (…) I accepted and told me that (the negotiators on both sides) would meet quickly and see if we could find a solution,” he added.
Earlier, von der Laien said via X that he told Trump, during a “good conciliation” they had, that negotiations would be required until July 9th to “reach good agreement”.
On Friday, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations on both sides and threatened to increase customs duties on products imported into his country by the EU to June 1st.
In early April Donald Trump gave a 90 -day margin to close US-EU agreement. The deadline expires on July 9th.
However, the US is applying 25% customs duties on cars, aluminum and steel, as well as 10% base duties to almost all other goods imported into the US market by EU Member States.
