A message of support to the women of Afghanistan and a clear position in favor of the protection of human rights was addressed by the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michaelidouduring its intervention – through a teleconference – at the parallel event of the 59th UN Human Rights Council (HRC59) held today in Geneva.
The minister, in her placement, referred to the gloomy reality experienced by women and girls in Afghanistan, pointing out that reliable UN sources document an institutionalized regime of gender -based oppression and apartheid.
As he pointed out: “An institutionalized system of discrimination, separation and exclusion of women and girls has deleted any concept of autonomy and personal will under the guise of morality and tool of religion.”
Ms Michaelidou highlighted the human dimension of the subject, giving voice to the Afghan women who are still fighting for their dignity and rights. At the same time, he praised the heroism of those who testified their testimonies during the event.
Referring during her speech to the Greek stance, she recalled that from the first moment of Taliban’s assumption by the Taliban, in 2021, Greece reacted by acts: “Through coordinated actions, our country contributed decisively to the rescue and hospitality of female MPs, Judges. But these are only a minimum of those who were left behind. “
The Minister pointed to Greece’s steady commitment as EU Member State. and a member of the UN Security Council for the period 2025-2026, in reinforcing the role of women in peace processes and in the integration of gender dimension into all UN structures, through the application of the agenda for women, peace and security.
Concluding her speech, she sent a clear message: “The essential gender equality has power and transformative dynamics because it derives from the democratic authority itself. Progress for women is progress for everyone. “
