Dimitris Tsiodras: To maintain a separate fund for public health in the next EU budget

The maintenance of a separate fund for the public health in the next EU budget, as the successor of the EU4Health programme, asks Dimitris Tsiodraswith his question to the European Commission.

It also completes by asking the Commission about how it intends to ensure sufficient funding for public health in the programming period 2028-2034 with the aim of building a real European Health Union that will benefit all citizens.

THE MEP and a press representative of the New Democracy Eurogroup emphasizes that the Commission’s proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028-2034 does not include a separate fund for public health. He also emphasizes that the absorption of health together with biotechnology in the wider Competitiveness Fund raises questions about the lack of prioritization in the field of public health.

He notes at the same time that in its recent Report, the Parliament underlines its belief that the next MFF “must build on the work done in the current programming period by ensuring that the necessary investments are made to build a real European Health Union that will benefit all citizens”.

It concludes by stressing the need to boost investment in public health, maintain its ‘autonomy’ within the next seven-year EU budget and not be absorbed by other conflicting objectives.

Question requesting a written answer to the Commission

Subject: Ensuring adequate funding for public health under the new Multiannual Financial Framework

The Commission’s proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028-2034 does not include a separate fund for public health, as a successor to the EU4Health programme.

The absorption of health together with biotechnology in the wider Competitiveness Fund raises questions about the lack of prioritization in the public health sector.

It is recalled that in its recent Report, the Parliament underlines its belief that the next MFF “must build on the work carried out during the current programming period by ensuring that the necessary investments are made to build a real European Health Union that will benefit all citizens”.

In light of the above, the Commission is asked:

How does it intend to ensure adequate funding in the next MFF for public health and building a real European Health Union that benefits all citizens?

How will it ensure that investment in public health is strengthened, maintains its ‘autonomy’ within the next MFF and is not absorbed by other conflicting objectives?
