Dimitrios Ploumis or simply Dimitrios will be the new Greek Orthodox Metropolitan France. The 42-year-old hierarch is enthroned in the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Paris, on Saturday (18.09.2021).
According to the Synod of Orthodox Bishops of France (AEOF), Dimitrios Ploumis was elected in July by the Holy Synod of Of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Replaces the Metropolitan of France Emmanuel (Adamakis), who has held this position since 2003.
Born in Thessaloniki, the young metropolitan, aged 42, was a priest for six years in the historic Orthodox Church of Marseille. He has also been involved in “numerous ecumenical and interfaith initiatives,” according to the AEOF. He has studied at the Higher Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki and then at the Theological School of the University of Thessaloniki. He was ordained in 2007 while speaking Greek, French and English.
He is also the President of the AEOF and with this title the main interlocutor of public authority in France for Orthodox worship.
Bishop Emmanuel was elected in January in Constantinople Metropolitan of Chalcedon.
