The results of research on sugar levels are of great concern diabetes to adult population.
One in ten adults worldwide lives with diabetes, while one in five adults does not know they have diabetes, points out the Hellenic Red Cross. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the Thessaloniki Regional Department of the EES carried out, today, an informational activity as well as blood sugar measurements at the Agia Sofia Metro stop.
Among the citizens who passed by the EAC stand and took a blood sugar test was the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia-Thrace issues, Konstantinos Giulekas. “The EES throughout Greece, but especially in Thessaloniki, has accustomed us to very important social actions. Today’s action is one such, here in the “heart” of the city, on Agia Sophia Street. Passers-by can come and get themselves checked for diabetes, on this day when the whole world is becoming even more aware of a scourge that is truly sweeping the entire humanity. We must know – and it is good – because through knowledge we can also anticipate. It is therefore important that the EAC people are here with us today, as they are every day. We thank them for their offer”, said Mr. Giulekas after the blood sugar measurement.
The director of the Thessaloniki Regional Department of the EES Despoina Filippidakis, for her part, stated that “the EES, as an awareness raising, prevention and early diagnosis body, is here on the street, today, in order to inform the public about health issues and now about diabetes mellitus. Our goal is prevention, awareness, early diagnosis, as well as informing people suffering from diabetes on how they can manage it in their daily lives. Our main goal is prevention. We are talking about all types of diabetes. Here we should emphasize that type 2 diabetes can be prevented, when there is daily physical exercise, regular check-ups, examinations, as well as a balanced diet. We inform the public how to improve their daily life, their lifestyle, so that they don’t get sick.”
