Dendias: Greece sends armored vehicles to Lebanon – Need to protect the Christian populations of the Middle East

The dispatch of armored vehicles to Lebanon the Minister of National Defense announced in the following days Nikos Dendiasafter his meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Michelle Menassa at Ministry of Defense. Mr. Dendias emphasized that Greece practically supports Lebanon’s effort to ensure stability and developmentnoting: “And because words are not enough, we have agreed to gift Lebanon with a series of armored and transport vehicles. A Greek tanker will transport them to Beirut in the next few days”.

The minister also referred to continuation of the military cooperation program of the two countries, stressing that Greece is willing to train officers of the Lebanese armed forces in its military academies.

He also reminded that Greece has played an important role in the renewal of its mandate UNIFILEas a non-permanent member of its Security Council UNwhile already participating in the mission with a frigate. At the same time, he underlined that the country is ready to continue its presence in the region, if requested by the Lebanese side.

Referring to bilateral relations, Mr. Dendias noted that his visit Michelle Menassa “is tangible proof of the deepening of relations” between Greece and Lebanon, while he characterized “positive development for stability in the Eastern Mediterraneanยป its delimitation agreement EEZ between Lebanon and Cyprus.

He made special mention of the need to protect the Christian populations her Middle Eastpointing out that Greece condemns all forms of violence against religious freedom and supports the its Greek Orthodox Patriarchate area.

For his part, Michel Menasa thanked Greece for constant friendship and supportstressing: “The assistance you are providing today reflects your continued commitment to Lebanon.”

He recognized, at the same time, the difficulties that his country is experiencing on an economic and security level, underlining that the Lebanese armed forces remain strong and committed to the defense of their sovereignty.

In closing, he referred to the agreement on the Lebanon-Cyprus EEZsaying that “it is based on the friendship that exists between Lebanon and Greece”, while he expressed his appreciation for the continuous cooperation between the two countries.
