Something is happening in Maximou — and this time it is not just internal party “noise” or parapolitical behind the scenes. Coordination appears to have been lost as the government attempts to present the new tax bill as a key example of social sensitivity and stability.
While the Maximos Palace invested in the rhetoric of “reliefs” for households and businesses — measures presented as a follow-up to the Prime Minister’s announcements at the TIF — came the Kostis Hatzidakis to blow up the narrative with two shock moves.
Firstthe surprise with the “sudden death” at ELTA, a decision that not only had not passed the party consultation but also reportedly surprised co-responsible ministers — even MPs of the New Democracy. And then, his public admission of the OPEKEPE subsidies, where “nothing is certain”, came to completely empty the Maximos Palace and destroy the image of stability he wanted to project.
The result? Instead of an image of a “coordinated government” that moves with a plan, it now projects a scheme that seems to work without central control, with ministers becoming autonomous and overturning in a few hours everything that the prime minister’s office tries to “build” communicatively.
And if anything really scares Maximos, it’s not the opposition — it is the internal failures which show that the government machine is starting to creak. Government work seems to move without a center of gravity in Maximos, with ministers operating autonomously and decisions taking even the power system itself by surprise. It needs a strong personality to impose pace, direction and cohesion — because without it, the image of government is more like parallel trajectories than a coordinated staff.
