Chrysochoidis: With a plan and strategy from the Traffic Police, accidents are reduced and lives are saved

A message of zero tolerance towards iniquity, sent by Michalis Chrysochoidiss, during his speech to 160 new police officers who joined the Services of the Attica Traffic Directorate and especially the Traffic Accident Control & Prevention Team – OEPTA, during their theoretical training.

“We are here planning our presence on the streets, not because we are enemies of the citizens, but because we are allies with life, with safety, with law and legitimacy, and together we will implement a plan and a strategy to curb lawlessness and traffic accidents», said the Minister of Citizen Protection, adding that it is a conscious decision to strengthen OEPTA “to be able to give a signal to all the citizens in Attica that we will be here present”.

He also emphasized that for the first time the combat Traffic Services are being significantly strengthened, noting that they have a very important task to perform, as the priority for the Ministry is the prevention and significant reduction of traffic accidents and the improvement of the living conditions of people in their cities and in their neighborhoods.

Positive data on traffic accidents

He also referred to the so far positive elements of the reduction in traffic, stressing that, due to the intense activity of the Traffic forces, especially on Fridays and weekends “lives are saved”. “In 2025 the controls were 40% more. Why? Because there is a plan and strategy from the Service. There is a comprehensive process, worked out to have efficiency and result production“, he characteristically said.

More specifically, in terms of data, in 2023, 143,298 checks were carried out and 48,134 violations were confirmed, while 246 arrests were made. In 2024, checks more than doubled, reaching 345,369, confirmed violations 115,063 and arrests 297. Finally, in 2025, more than 534,653 checks were carried out during which 130,636 violations were confirmed while 765 arrests were made.

As reported by the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the evidence shows that:

Vehicle inspections increased by +141% in 2024 compared to 2023 and a further +55% in 2025.

Violation convictions increased by +139% in 2024 and an additional +13% in 2025.
Arrests increased +21% in 2024 and +157% in 2025.

“Beware of behavioral issues. When checking someone for an offense we must be flawless. Any rude or aggressive or other behavior that creates conflict with the citizen is not allowed. Even when he is aggressive, we do our job. You have nothing to fear. You have the Law as an ally, your Service and myself, who have set traffic issues as a high priority” said the Minister of Citizen Protection at another point, while emphasizing the fact that 79 of the 160 new police officers who will join OEPTA are women.
