Chrysochoidis announced measures for gun ownership: “The local mafias and thugs will not rule the island and let them put that in their minds”

The patchwork at weddings and baptisms in Crete is over

The seven axes of the legislation that will be passed in the coming days, as well as the upgrading and strengthening of the police services on the island to deal with crime and weaponrybut also vendettas and the custom of patchwork was presented by the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis from the General Police Directorate of Heraklion, sending a message of determination, as he characteristically said and repeating that this is what Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself has requested.

“The local mafias and thugs will not rule the island and let them put that in their minds” emphasized the minister and added: “We will not let crime, gun ownership and violence tarnish this wonderful place, this historic place. The glass overflowed a long time ago. After the locusts of OPEKEPE, the killers came to terrorize ordinary citizens who want to live calmly and peacefully.”

According to the announcements of Mr. Chrysochoidis, the changes in the legislation are as follows:

1. Felony penalty for unlawful possession, or transportation of a firearm, with very specific identification of the type of firearm.

2. Felony punishment for a repeat offender, i.e. imprisonment of up to 10 years in case he has been irrevocably retried for the felony of Law 2168/93 (regarding weapons) within ten years. The sentence is served (it will not be commuted and the appeal will not have suspensive force).

3. Anticipation of aggravating circumstances: e.g. recidivism in case of misdemeanor, use of weapons in cases of animal theft, unlawful violence, extortion (the sentence is served).

4. Imposition of restrictive conditions by a Prosecutor’s Office in case of danger to life, when there is a fight between persons or groups (based on family, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion) such as e.g. prohibition of communication, approach to residential premises, delivery of weapons, appearance at the A.T. etc.

5. Review of the framework and review of the issuance of shooting permits.

6. Special provision for exemption (ie for non-imposition of punishment) of anyone who voluntarily surrenders his weaponry to the police, in view of strict controls.

Regarding specifically the patchesit is envisaged to expand the public spaces where the possession and carrying of weapons is a felony, to include social events with a large number of participants, such as trade fairs and wedding events.

To strengthen the police in Crete, the minister emphasized that the Department for Combating Organized Crime (of the Greek FBI, as he said) is being upgraded to a Sub-Directorate, which will be staffed with additional staff and financially strengthened to have a full operational and efficient operation.

Regarding the massacre at NorthMr. Chrysochoidis pointed out that the police did their job very well and that they will get to the bottom of the investigation. He characteristically emphasized: “We are not going to be afraid of anyone and primarily those who think they will impose their own right at the expense of the rest… It is a shame for such a bright place with such distinguished people that there are these black spots that create so many problems at times.”

As for Ad’s comment. Georgiadis on gun ownership, Mr. Chrysochoidis stated that he does not share such views.
