Chatzidakis: Crete’s electric interface saves 550 million euros a year

Its overall economic benefit electrical interface Crete – Peloponnese is expected to reach 550m euros, the Deputy Prime Minister said in a post on social media. Kostis Hatzidakis.

Specifically, Mr. Hatzidakis said about the Attica-Crete submarine interconnection:

“A project we’ve been expecting for decades is now becoming an act! I’m talking about the underwater electric interconnection of Attica-Crete, which started operating. I remember being discussed since I was a student myself in Crete! And I am very pleased that the project started during my term in the Ministry of Environment and Energy. And where I was present, when the contracts for its implementation were signed in the summer of 2020 in Heraklion, Crete. “

And, the deputy prime minister adds: “The Crete -Attica electric interconnection is not just a project of great value to Crete. It is a project of national importance, with multiple benefits. It enhances Crete’s energy security because it is now ending its electrical isolation. And it will be able to get electricity from the network all over the country. At the same time, the operation of the project generates € 300 million a year from the charges of utility services (SGIs).

In combination with the Crete -Peloponnese interconnection, already in operation, the total economic benefit is expected to reach 550m euros annually. At the same time, it has a very positive environmental sign, because the polluting units that are currently operating in Crete will soon be closed. In this regard, we generally promote the links of our islands to the mainland electricity grid. The Cyclades electric interconnection will be completed in 2026 and at the same time planning and proceeding with electrical interconnections with the Dodecanese and the islands of the North Aegean. “

And, in the meantime, “the submarine electric interconnection of Attica – Crete is yet another proof that the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is designing and implementing large projects that make the daily life of the citizens better. And in this direction we are determined to continue! ”, Mr. Hatzidakis assures, who is closing, congratulations to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, to all the ministers who have contributed to the implementation of the project and ADMIE over the years.
