Chancellor with the second is Friedrich Mertz – ending the political thriller in Germany

Was finally elected to the second vote, chancellor of Germany Friedrich Mertz. After a six -hour thriller, Mertz received 325 votes, 289 MPs voted against and one abstention was recorded.

German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz was elected to Germany as he managed to secure the necessary votes (325 in total 630) of Parliament during the second vote held today (06.05.2025).

It was preceded by a political thriller as Friedrich Mertz in the first vote failed to gather the required majority of 316 MPs by a total of 630. They voted 310 (the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition has 328 MPs), 307, while there were 3 men. Nine Members were absent from the process.

It is a development that no one expected. A total of 18 MPs from the government camp did not vote in favor of Friedrich Mertz, making a serious blow to both himself and the government.
