In the cross -border and European dimension, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy identifies, Nikos Tsafithe solution to the problem with the exact electricity prices in Greece and SE Europe.
As Nikos Tsafos said today (4.6.2025) at the 10th Energy Transition Symposium, the government is making changes to our market to help consumers, but the issue is much more European. Thus, the RIS focuses its efforts to persuade Brussels of the need for reforms related to issues such as links and broader energy planning.
Specifically, the Greek plan extends to three axes and time horizons. In the short term, it is proposed that international interconnections, especially between Si and Central Europe, operate a little closer to their technical boundaries. This is something that was already tested between France and Germany during the energy crisis of 2022 and brought fruit. Such a move will only be made when prices are launched, Mr Tsafos explains.
In the medium term, there must be an incentive that European countries depending on the integration of the Balkans into the rest of the market, can invest in new interconnections without incorporating full costs. This is reasonable, Mr. Tsafos stressed, because otherwise it does not have logic eg. For Austria to implement a project that only burdens its own consumers, but benefits our own.
Finally, the long-term horizon arises the issue of broader energy planning, which is now being made more at a Member State level than the entire EU. The deputy minister also stood at the hundreds of millions of euros that the lack of sufficient interconnections may cost, as the price increases. Thus, the implementation of additional projects is absolutely economically advantageous.
