THE Canada will impose reciprocal duties 25% in US -made vehicles as a countermeaser in Donald Trump’s government, as Prime Minister Mark Carney said today (3.4.2025).
It is noted that Canada escaped from the so -called “mutual duties” of President Donald Trump announced yesterday, but the new 25% US duty on foreign cars were still in force this morning. For Canada, these duties apply to the non -American content of the final vehicles.
Canadian duties will only apply to vehicles that do not comply with the US-Mexico-Canadian agreement and the “non-Canadian content” in cars and trucks sent in accordance with the rules of that trade agreement, according to a Bloomberg report. In other words, Canadian taxes reflect the structure of US car duties.
Canada’s car sector is largely integrated with the US and is going to be hit by Trump’s duties. Stelantis, owner of the trademarks Jeep and Chrysler, has already announced that it will close the assembly plant in Windsor, Ontario for two weeks as it is considering the impact, the company said in a note to employees.
Large US duties also remain in products that do not comply with the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, as well as all steel and aluminum products. Trump has also threatened to add new tariffs to pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, copper and timber.
