Saint Argyrios the Epanomite the Neo -martyr
Saint Neo -Martyr Argyrios was born in 1788 in Epinomi of Thessaloniki by Asterios and Basilica, the genus Dugioudi. At an early age he came to Thessaloniki, where he was hired by a sewing servant.
During those days a Christian from Soho was locked in the Pasha prison of Thessaloniki for a crime he had done. Not having to pay the money that Pasha was asking for, threatened to hang him. In the face of the threat of death, the prisoner decided to change. This was delighted by the Agarines, who immediately took him out of prison and took him to a cafe at the site of Tachtakala in order to initiate him to the Muslim religion.
Argyrios, who had been informed of the incident, also entered the cafe and began to control him for his misconduct and at the same time motivate him to return to Orthodox faith again. His attitude caused the generals so much that they rushed to him and began to punch him so wildly that they would kill him, if they did not suspend their anger in the hope that they could attract him to their own faith. So they tried, threatening to kill him, to force him to change. The voice of the neo -martyr was thundered: “I am a Christian and I do not deny my faith. My glory and honor the Cross of Christ. My desire is to die for Christ’s faith and love. “
The Agarines then led Argyrios to the judge, before which they again tried to convince him of the use of threats and when flattery and promises of gifts and office. After two days, the Janissaries reiterated their efforts again, but to no avail. So they asked the judge to order his execution. But, seeing that Argyrios had not committed an offense worthy of death, he tried to calm the anger of the furious Turks and convince them that it is not fair to kill an innocent man. They were disturbed and furiously against him, so the judge ordered his killing.
Thus, at the age of eighteen, in 1806 on Friday, Saint Neo -Martyr Argyrios was led to a so -called campaign (today’s Kapani) place, in the central market of the city, where he was hanged and sealed his confession to Christ with his sacrifice.
