Budapest got US extension for natural gas payments to Russia

Hungary received an extension from the US for sanctions exemption, which allows Budapest to pay payments gas to Russiaas Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sigado announced today (21.3.2025).

Washington imposed new sanctions on Russian Gazprombank last year, one of Russia’s largest banks to receive gas payments from Gazprom customers in Europe. Sanctions were imposed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister made the announcement at a press conference he gave with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan as part of an official visit to Ankara.

Sigiarto also stressed that Hungary is in talks with the state -owned Botas pipeline operator to buy gas directly from Turkey in 2025.

Yesterday (20.3.2025), sources told Reuters that Turkey and Slovakia also received a corresponding US extension for sanctions exemption to pay natural gas payments to Russia.
